# Open Two Panels Side by Side

> Add a second panel so you can keep the user list and chat — or any two panels — open at the same time.

<Note>
  **Draft** — this page is draft documentation for BigBlueButton 4.0. The details described here may change before release.
</Note>

In BigBlueButton 4.0 you are no longer limited to one panel at a time on the left. You can add a second panel and keep two open together — the user list and the chat, for example — instead of switching between them.

## Add a second panel

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the first panel">
    Select a panel — the user list, chat, shared notes, or an app you have pinned — from the left side.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the second panel">
    Select the **add a second panel** button. A second panel opens beside the first.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose what goes in it">
    Whatever you select next opens in that second panel, so you can put the chat next to the user list, or shared notes next to the chat.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Switching between panels works the same way as in 3.0 — selecting a different panel replaces what is in the one you are using, and the other stays where it is.
