# Request the Ability to Present

> Ask the moderator for the presenter role so you can share your screen, slides, or a video.

<Note>
  **Draft** — this page is draft documentation for BigBlueButton 4.0. The details described here may change before release.
</Note>

In BigBlueButton 3.0, only a moderator could hand out the presenter role. BigBlueButton 4.0 adds the ability for a participant to **request** it — so if you have something to show the class, you can ask rather than wait to be chosen.

## Send a request

Select **Request to present**. The moderator receives your request and can approve or decline it. When it is approved, you become the presenter and the sharing controls in the media area become available to you.

## If you do not see the option

What you can do depends on which presenting mode the moderator has chosen for the session:

| Mode | What you can do |
| ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Assigned** | Only the moderator assigns the presenter role — this is how 3.0 worked, and there is no request option. |
| **Request and approve** | You can ask to present, and the moderator approves or declines. |
| **Anyone can present** | You can take the presenter role yourself at any time, without approval. |

<Note>
  Only one person presents at a time. When someone else becomes the presenter, your sharing controls become unavailable again.
