About BigBlueButton

BigBlueButton is an open-source virtual classroom built specifically for online learning. Unlike general-purpose video conferencing tools, every feature — from the multi-user whiteboard and shared notes to polling, breakout rooms, and recordings — is shaped by a single question: does this help teachers teach and learners learn? That pedagogical focus drives the roadmap, and it is why each release goes beyond generic meeting features to include many refinements that improve the live-classroom experience.

How to read these updates

The Product Updates highlight the changes most relevant to teachers and students in each release. They are summaries, not exhaustive changelogs — each entry links to the full release notes on GitHub for the complete list of fixes, refactors, and infrastructure work.

Blindside Networks

Blindside Networks is the company behind BigBlueButton and provides commercial hosting of the platform to customers world-wide. Some of the updates listed here describe value-added capabilities, integrations, or configurations that are unique to Blindside Networks hosting and may not be available in self-hosted installations of the open-source project. Revenue from these features funds ongoing development of BigBlueButton itself, which benefits the whole community. Over time we contribute many of these improvements back to the project. For example, we built the most efficient recording processor for BigBlueButton sessions, refined it over many years, and contributed it back to the community in 2023 so everyone using BigBlueButton could benefit. If you are unsure whether a feature applies to your setup, please contact support.
