# Check Understanding

> Use polls, quizzes, and Smart Slides to assess student comprehension in real time.

Presenters and moderators can check student comprehension during a session using [quick polls](#run-quick-polls), [Smart Slides](#use-smart-slides), [graded quizzes](#run-a-graded-quiz), and [shared poll results](#show-poll-results-to-the-class). Real-time feedback helps you identify gaps and adjust your teaching as you go.

## Run quick polls

Launch an instant poll to gauge understanding. BigBlueButton supports four poll types:

* **Yes / No** — quick binary checks ("Do you understand this concept?")
* **True / False** — fact verification
* **A / B / C / D** — multiple choice questions
* **Custom responses** — open-ended typed answers

## Use Smart Slides

Smart Slides let you embed poll questions directly in your presentation. To use them:

* Format each question with answer options on the slide (for example, `A) Option 1 / B) Option 2`).
* BigBlueButton detects the poll-formatted slide automatically.
* Select the poll prompt to launch the poll in one step.
* Results appear on screen as soon as students respond.

## Run a graded quiz

Use polling as a graded quiz when you want to score answers:

* Mark the correct answer when you create the poll.
* Results show which students chose the correct answer.
* Review results together as a class to turn missed questions into learning moments.

## Show poll results to the class

Poll results appear as a chart visible to all participants. Use them to:

* See the distribution of answers at a glance.
* Decide where to focus your next explanation.
* Spark discussion by asking the class to explain their reasoning ("Why did some of you choose B?").

## Choose a comprehension check strategy

Match the poll type to the moment in your session:

| Strategy         | Poll type                            | When to use                |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------ | -------------------------- |
| Concept check    | True / False or A / B / C / D        | After explaining a concept |
| Exit ticket      | Custom response                      | End of session             |
| Pre-assessment   | Multiple choice                      | Start of session           |
| Peer instruction | A / B / C / D, discuss, then re-poll | Mid-lecture                |
