# About Us

> Who are we and why did we build BigBlueButton?

Hi there.  We created BigBlueButton in 2007 with one mission: to build the worlds most effective platform for online virtual classes.

Why?  We believe every student in the world deserves access to a high quality online learning experience.  And we believe every educator deserves the best platform to deliver it.

That platform is *not* a business-focused video conferencing system.  You can see more about the differences between BigBlueButton and a video conferencing system at [bigbluebutton.com](https://bigbluebutton.com).

In building the platform, we built a company to offer software as a service hosting for BigBlueButton, which we provide in two flavours:

* **BigBlueButton Essentials** -- The core open source with a few value added capabilities.
* **BigBlueButton Enhanced** -- An enhanced hosted version of BigBlueButton with many capabilities to increase learning outcomes.
