Built for Teaching

Unlike general-purpose video conferencing tools, every feature in BigBlueButton is designed around how people actually teach and learn, commingly referred to as the science of Pedagogy. Our design draws on the following Pedagogical foundations:
  • Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development — We learn best when attempting something that is not too easy or too hard. Like a good gym workout, the best results are when we stretch and get ‘into the zone’ of optimal difficulity.
  • Social Constructivism — We learn best when learning with others.
  • Bloom’s Taxonomy — We learn in stages, and each stage builds upon the previous. Building upon remembering and understanding, the real learning occurs when you are actively solving probems and evaluating the outcomes. This is learn by doing.
  • Active Learning — Passive learning does not work. Active learning means your experiencing some effort, perhaps a momentry sense of frustration as you struggle, and that struggle is how your brain rewires and learns. No struggle, no learning.
